Why Cooling Your Transmission Is So Important

transmission

Excessive heat kills transmission and torque converter components. The transmission gets hot when under extreme tension due to racing. It is well-known that every 20degF rise in temperature of the transmission can reduce its lifespan and cause it to heat up faster. This is well-known and widely known. But, many are still unsure of how to solve this problem.

Here are our recommendations for different kinds of drag racing:

If you drive your car in the street or back to the pit area after making a pass ensure that you run at least a cooler, and if it is possible, an electrical fan. Many customers have looped cooler lines. In the case of a powerglide 4L60E looped cooler line dumps the automatic transmission fluid at the highest temperatures (directly from the torque converter) into the clutch and gear set packs. This can lead to premature failure of the entire system.

We suggest a cooler that is of high quality. We offer 4L60E transmission. In a high powered setups where an input shaft that is ringless is required, use pumps that are designed to ensure cooler flow. When used in conjunction with our ringless shaft, high volume pumps can have a cooler flow rate and pressure. A OEM-style pump that has the input shaft without a ring does not have the cooler flow or pressure. This results in super heated transmission fluid pouring directly into the clutch and gears.

If your vehicle is towing up to the starting line, then towed back to your pit area after making an exit, there's very little time for a cooler circuit to have any effect on the used 4L60E transmission. It is possible to utilize a looped cooler or an input shaft arrangement that does not provide for the cooler circuit. This will cause the torque converter and transmission still being extremely hot after the transfer. Sharp Stuff recommends using an external cooler. For cooling solutions, we've had great results with the use of a leaf blower or a high-velocity fan set directly underneath the vehicle.

Use a quality ATF

We select a Lucas Oil blended fluid. Synthetic and semi synthetic fluids are able to handle better at regulating heat than conventional fluids and also retain better lubrication properties than conventional oils.

The heat can cause death

When you are in the middle of the hot summer, the situation is more difficult. It is nevertheless possible to have a positive impact in the results of your drag race car when there is a problem with its performance or the parts that have failed.

Conclusion:

The cooling of the transmission is an essential aspect of vehicle ownership that is frequently overlooked. Overheated temperatures destroy components of the torque converter and transmission which can result in lower performance, shortened lifespan, and increased repair costs. These steps can help you keep your car operating cool and comfortable for many years.
